Brief History:
Jama Masjid is an important mosque located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. The mosque was built in 1690, during the rule of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It is one of the oldest mosques in the south of India and is said to be the second largest in the region. This ancient mosque is believed to have been constructed by the great nobleman of Mughal origin, Syed Abdul Rahim Khan. The grand mosque has a number of tombs, domes and minarets. It is also home to an important Sufi shrine dedicated to the pious saint, Muhammad Bin Yusuf. The mosque and its surrounding areas are popular attractions among tourists. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
Jama Masjid in Kanchipuram, India is a magnificent example of Indo-Islamic architecture. It is constructed of granite in the Dravidian style with a pillared verandah and high walls. The main entrance to the mosque is through a tall arched gateway, topped with ornamental minarets. Inside, there is an inner courtyard surrounded by covered prayer halls, while a central dome dominates the entire structure. The interior walls are decorated with beautiful carved motifs while the mosque also contains a fountain and a tank to store rainwater. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
