Overview:
Alangudipatti is an ancient shrine located in the village of Alangudi in the Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to the 23rd Jain Tirthankara, Parshvanatha and is considered to be one of the holiest Jain sites in the world. The temple was built sometime between the 8th and 10th centuries AD and is one of the oldest extant Jain monuments in the country. It is an important pilgrimage site for Jains, who come to seek divine blessings for themselves and their loved ones. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The highlight of this temple is the intricately carved Jain Tirthankara Image, which is believed to be almost 2000 years old and was discovered in 1959. It is a stunning image that stands tall at 6.7 feet and has a beautiful face with a smile, lotus pedestal and the halo of Jain aureole around it. There are 12 images, representing the 12 Jain Tirthankaras and they are flanked by two ornate pillars. The temple also houses other sculptures, carvings and statues, including a colossal Lord Parshvanath and four standing figures of Lord Parshvanath. Other notable features of this temple include two 12-armed dancing figures, a sitting four-armed figure and a four-armed figure in pralamba posture.
