Isvara Temple Overview Isvara Temple is a Hindu temple located in Bhubaneshwar, India. Dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, Isvara Temple is one of the four most important temples in India. The temple is believed to be at least a thousand years old and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of India. Isvara Temple Prominent Features Isvara temple is considered to be one of the major historical monuments of Bhubaneshwar, located close to the Lingaraja temple. The temple is divided into four different sections, each surrounded by thick walls. The outer walls have the beautifully carved sculptures of the Raja Gopuram, the main repository of images of gods and goddesses, and the temple for Lord Shiva, with a five feet tall Nandi Sculpture, a bull that is believed to be the vahana (transport) of Lord Shiva. Isvara Temple History The exact origin of the Isvara Temple is uncertain and varies from a few hundred to a few thousand years, but most historians agree that it dates back to the 10th century. It is believed that the original structure was built by the Chalukya Dynasty, but later renovated and expanded by the Marathas and Madhavaraya. The temple has undergone many important renovations, including many changes in its structure and sculptures, as well as its architecture. Isvara Temple Interesting Facts • Isvara Temple, along with the Lingaraja and Ananta Basudeva temples, is considered one of the oldest and most important monuments of Bhubaneshwar. • The Isvara Temple is the only temple in India to have four separate walls. • The walls of the temple contain several intricately carved sculptures of deities, beasts, and demons. • The Nandi Sculpture is said to be made out of a single piece of black stone. • The temple is known for its beautiful and serene environment that attracts tourists and locals alike.
