Hathikhana was founded in the 17th century by Thakur Saheb Harji, who built the Hathi Gate. Hathikhana was a major trading center and a popular destination on the ancient trade route between Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and the capital of Delhi. The village is also such a significant cultural and historical landmark that India's national broadcaster, Doordarshan, chose to depict Hathikhana as the perfect village in their television series, Meri Bhabhi.

Hathikhana is also referred to as “the village of monkeys” as it is home to an abundance of monkeys. The village is believed to have been named after a troop of monkeys that used to inhabit the place. In addition, Hathikhana is also famous for its excellent cow milk and dairy products. The village is well-known for the spicy dahi (white butter milk), and its mawa, which is made with milk, sugar, and ghee.
