Fresce paintings In India: History,Facts, & Services

Fresco painting is a type of mural painting painted onto a freshly-laid plaster wall. The plaster, or “intonaco”, is made from a mixture of sand, lime, and water and is applied to the wall in several thin layers. After the plaster has been applied and allowed to dry, the artist paints onto the plaster with pigments mixed with water and a binder – usually glue or egg yolk. The fresco painting can be created in either buon fresco, true fresco, or mixed media. Fresco painting has a very distinct appearance. It can often be seen in many Renaissance paintings, especially in works of the Florentine school. The colors in the paintings are often very bright and the pigments are long-lasting. Pigments used in fresco paintings were either natural substances or heavily processed artificial paints. Natural pigments used included iron oxide, mineral ochre, ochres, umbers, and siennas. Fresco painting has been used as a medium in Europe since the 12th century. Works of artists such as Giotto di Bondone, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Duccio di Buoninsegna made fresco paintings popular in the Renaissance. The baroque period also saw a resurgence of the medium with the works of Caravaggio and Peter Paul Rubens. Fresco painting has also been used in India, China, and Japan for centuries. Fresco painting has an advantage in its longevity. The stability of the wall plaster and pigments make the paintings nearly indestructible and have been found over centuries after the artist’s death. Fresco paintings have also been known to remain vibrant in color and sharp in line over centuries due to the durability of the pigments and the wall plaster. Fresco painting is a unique art form that has withstood the test of time. It is a medium that has been used by many great masters who have left behind timeless works of art that still captivate audiences today.
