Durga Temple In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
The Durga Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Durga, located in Aihole in the Indian state of Karnataka. The temple was constructed during the 6th–7th centuries CE and is among the most important Hindu temples in south India. It is believed to be one of the oldest temples of its kind in India. The temple is said to be a mixture of two distinct architectural styles - northern and southern. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main shrine of the temple encloses an image of the goddess Durga. The main doorway of the shrine has an interesting design of four lions is flanked by two temple guardians, or 'dvarapalas'. There also two shrines that flank the main shrine - one dedicated to Shiva and the other to Vishnu. The temple has many sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses along its walls. The ceiling of the temple has seven different scenes depicting the story of Parvati's hunt. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour
