Overview:
thi Ratha, Mamallapuram is a rock-cut temple complex located in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Draupathi, the wife of Pandavas, from the epic of Mahabharata. The rock-cut temple was created during the reign of the Pallava dynasty in the 7th century as a part of their attempt to create a ‘Vaishanavite temple city’. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
• The temple is oriented south-eastward, meaning it is facing towards east to receive the morning sunlight. • The complex consists of seven Rathas which are arranged together and the main temple, dedicated to Draupathi. • The temple has many finely carved images of Hindu gods and goddesses including Shiva, Vishnu, and other Hindu gods. • The entrance of the temple is carved with intricate sculptures and the walls are also ornamented with stunning sculptures. • The roof of the temple is decorated with numerous figures and various scenes from Hindu mythology.
