Charaideo Overview
Charaideo is an ancient capital of the Ahom Kingdom. It is located in the upper part of the Sivasagar district in the state of Assam, India. It was the last capital of the dynasty started by the first Shan ruler of Assam, Su-ka-pha. It was the capital of the Ahom kingdom for about five hundred years until the kingdom fell to the Burmese in 1818. The ruins of the ancient capital still exist in Charaideo, and it is now an important tourist attraction in Assam.
Charaideo Prominent Features
Charaideo has several prominent features, including an array of Ahom monuments and temples. The most prominent of these is the Charaideo Maidam, or burials, constructed in the 13th century by Sukapha, the first Ahom king. The Charaideo Maidam consists of fifteen tombs located in the charai or “courtyard” of a stupa-like structure. Each tomb is made of a single stone slab, with skillful carvings, which depict scenes from Ramayana. Other prominent features in Charaideo include: Tholung Maidam, featuring more than 108 tombs of various Ahom monarchs; Talatal Ghar, built in the 18th century as the royal palace of the Ahom kings; and several other ancient temples and monuments.
Charaideo History
The Ahom kings built the city of Charaideo in the 13th century and it served as the capital of Ahom kingdom for nearly 500 years. The city’s fortifications suggest it was more a utilitarian residence for the king, rather than a military stronghold. The city was sacked and destroyed by the Burmese in 1818, and its ruins remain to this day.
