Overview:
Caves on Burud Hill are an ancient set of rock cut caves located on the slopes of Mount Burud in the Ahmednagar district, in the state of Maharashtra, India. These caves date back to 1st century BCE and have been important archaeological sites since the time of the Nizams. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The caves on Burud Hill are cut into the rocks and are carved at a height of 300-350 feet. The main known feature of the caves is the carvings of the Buddhist Chaitya, which consists of a large complex of stupas, pillars, viharas and lastly, the chaitya hall. The walls of the caves are decorated with intricate carvings and motifs of animals and birds, which resemble the Shalbhanjika sculptures of Ajanta.
