Bekal Fort In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
Bekal Fort is an ancient fort located in Kasaragod district of Kerala, India. It is one of the largest and best preserved forts in Kerala. The fort is believed to have been built in the 17th century by Sivappa Nayak of the Ikkeri Nayak dynasty. The fort covers an area of around 40 acres and is situated on a high rock rising above sea level, providing spectacular views of the Arabian Sea. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Bekal Fort is characterized by its large and well-preserved storage tanks, harbour, tunnels and observation towers. The fort also features two large and well-built circular observation towers which offer a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea, Pallikkara village and the mangrove forests of Chandragiri river. The large and deep moat fortified the fort from enemy attacks. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour

Bekal Fort was built by Shivappa Nayak of Bedanore in 1650 A.D. and was under the control of the Kolathiri Rajas and the Bedanore Empire until it was captured by Tipu Sultan and included in the Malabar district of his new Mysore Kingdom. The fort was further strengthened by Haider Ali and later, by Tipu Sultan. After Tipu Sultan's defeat in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war, the fort was handed over to the British, who used it as an army cantonment. The fort remained under the control of the British until 1947, at which time the British relinquished their power and Bekal Fort came under the control of the Government of India.
