Bara Khamba outside north entrance to shrine In India: History,Facts, & Services

Bara Khamba is a red sandstone gate that stands outside the north entrance to the Jama Masjid in Delhi. The gate was built in 1660 by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and was planned to be the main entrance to the mosque. The gate consists of four stories, each with a different architectural style. The first floor is built from red sandstone in a combination of Hindu and Islamic styles, while the second story is built from white marble in a purely Islamic design. The third and fourth stories, respectively, are built from red and white sandstone decorated with Persian inscriptions praising the emperor and Allah. The structure is topped off with a dome that stands about 40 feet tall. The gate is an iconic symbol of Mughal architecture and is also a popular spot for visitors to the Jama Masjid.
