Baori In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
is an ancient type of stepwell from India. It is a unique architectural feature in which the well steps down from the surface of the ground to the water table below. The walls of the well are typically lined with sculptures and intricate carvings. Baoris are typically associated with Hindu temples and palaces and have been built all across India from as far back as the 6th century. The oldest surviving Baori is said to have been built in the 11th century. Baoris are usually rectangular in shape, but can also form various other shapes like circles and octagons. The walls of the Baoris are often elaborately sculpted and are typically lined with sculptures of gods, mythical creatures, flowers and geometric designs. These carvings are often in the form of elaborate narratives, describing the journey of the soul and can be read in the form of a story. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
