Ancient Temple at Sumergarh In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
The ancient temple at Sumergarh is an ancient historic Hindu temple that dates back to the ninth century A.D. The temple is located in the village of Sumergarh, Gujarat, India. It is an example of the building architecture of the Chaulukyas, who were a powerful dynasty in the present day Gujarat region. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva and is one of the few surviving Hindu temples of pre-Islamic times. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most prominent feature of the temple is its intricately carved sculpture which is made of black basalt stone. The temple is a three-tiered structure with a trilokamandapa (hall) at the center, a mukhamandapa (portico) and a grivamandapa (porch). The temple also features a shikharam (roof) with intricate carvings of celestial figures and Hindu gods and goddesses. The temple is surrounded by a courtyard and has a pond.
