Overview:
The Ancient Mound of Sonkh is located near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, India. The site covers a total area of about two hectares, and consists of two distinct mounds. The larger mound is 55 meters in diameter and 11 meters in height, while the smaller mound is roughly 11 meters in diameter and 5 meters in height. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Mound of Sonkh is composed of several different structures, including a large mound of mud-brick, ornate structures made of stone, and a stone platform which is believed to have been used for religious activities. Numerous artifacts have been discovered at the site, including pottery, stone tools, and metal artifacts. In addition, the site also contains numerous sculptures of ancient deities and sculptures of animals such as horses, bulls, and elephants. Archaeologists believe that the Mound of Sonkh was originally built for agricultural purposes in the early Chalcolithic period. However, over time it began to be used for religious activities, as evidenced by the numerous sculptures of various deities discovered at the site. It is believed that the site was used by various cultures throughout its history, with the most notable being the Shunga Empire (150-50 BC) and the Kuṣāṇa Empire (100-300 AD).
