is a charitable non-profit Hindu faith-based organization. The organization was founded in 1955 by the initiative of 'Karan Sanatan Dharma Sabha (KSD Sabha). In 1990, the organization extended its activities to better serve all of Guyana’s Hindu communities. The mission of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha is to “to propagate, maintain and develop the traditional Hindu religion and culture for the benefit of all within the Sanatan Dharma community, and to provide spiritual and social support for all within the Sanatan community in Guyana.” The Maha Sabha provides a variety of services such as Hindu weddings, lectures and services, spiritual retreats, temple activities, a soup kitchen, weekly Sunday school classes, a library, and a temple hospital. The organization has established many temples throughout the country that offer a variety of religious services and activities. These include the offering of prayers, chanting of mantras, and offerings of fruits and flowers. The puja ritual begins with the Priest ringing a bell to enter the sanctum, which is followed by diksha, or showing of reverence to God. This is usually done with a Thali containing rice, flowers and incense. The Priest then chants mantras and offers prayers to the numerous deities, followed by aarti or lighting of oil lamps and ringing of bells. After that, devotees offer different offerings such as fruit, sweetmeats, sweets, and flowers. They also light diyas or oil lamps and make their wishes and offer their prayers.
