Founded in 1868, Smith Memorial Congregational is the oldest African American church in Forsyth County and one of the oldest African American churches in the state of North Carolina. The church was founded and organized by African Americans who were former slaves and their white Christian allies.

The church was started in June 1868 in a brush arbor near what is now the intersection of Long and Chestnut Streets. In 1872, the church was officially organized and the Reverend David Smith was called to be the pastor. In 1874, the first building was constructed and the church has been located at its present location on Anthony Street ever since.
