History:

St. Peter's AME was founded in the late 18th century during a powerful revivial in Christianity among African Americans. After two black Methodists, Richard Allen and Absalom Jones, were forced out of their white Methodist parish in Pennsylvania, a group of African Americans in Washington, D.C. formed St. Peter’s congregational church in 1815. Among its early members were Henry and James Smith, who ran a school for black children, and John Gadsby, famous for his barroom in Georgetown, D.C. The church was officially adopted by the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1822, making it one of the oldest churches in the nation.
