History:

Navarinou Square is a public space located in the city center of Athens, Greece. It is named after the Battle of Navarino, fought near the area in 1827. The battle was a joint naval affair between the fleets of Great Britain, France, and Russia against the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet. It was the final and decisive battle of the Greek War of Independence. The square was constructed in the late 19th century as part of the larger project of beautification of Athens during the neo-classical period. The project was initiated by King George I in 1862. The square was renovated in the early 1960s as part of the modernization efforts during the presidency of Konstantinos Karamanlis. The square was later renamed Navarinou Square in 1971, honouring those who had died in the Battle of Navarino. Since its renovation, the square has become a popular gathering place for residents and visitors. There is a large open-air café located in the square, as well as benches and trees which provide shade and a few decorative fountains. In addition, there are two landmarks in the square which commemorate the heroes of the Battle of Navarino. The first is a bronze statue of Greek heroes and leaders from the battle, placed in the center of the square in 1978. The second is the Navarinou Monument, erected in 2011 and located near the statue in the square. It is dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of Navarino, and depicts figures and events from the battle. Navarinou Square continues to be a popular meeting place in Athens, and is a symbol of the Greek War of Independence and the city's historic struggle for freedom.
