The first plans for a cathedral in Tampere were drawn up in 1827, after a fire destroyed the city's existing churches. The building was designed by the prominent architect Carl Ludvig Engel and completed in 1846. It is designed in the Neoclassical style, with its main pediment featuring a relief of King Frederick of Finland. Over the years, the cathedral has changed in many ways. In 1901, the organ was replaced with a larger one, and the interior was modified to reflect the changes. During World War II, the spire of the cathedral was destroyed. In 1983, the cathedral was renovated again, and the spire was replaced with a new one. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Finland.
