St. Peter Chanel was the patron saint of Oceania and a missionary martyr who died for the Catholic faith. He was born in 1803 in France, and after a volunteer mission to the Marquesas and Society Islands of French Polynesia, he was killed for his Catholic beliefs in 1841. History:

As a young man, he joined the Society of Mary in 1822 and was ordained a priest in 1827. After spending some years with the poor in rural France, he volunteered to go on a missionary trip to French Polynesia. He was welcomed warmly by the local people, until he and his two counterparts started to speak out against their rituals and beliefs. This led to Peter’s murder in 1841, and he was declared a martyr of the Catholic faith. St. Peter Chanel This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Fiji.
