It was founded in 1955, when the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia and the Lutheran Church of America declared their union, forming the Lutheran Church in America. In 1952, a group of Lutheran churches, churches in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and congregations in the Lutheran Church of Australia, met to discuss the creation of a unified church body across the South Pacific. Many regional and province-level representatives at the convention highlighted the need for a unified regional church, and in 1955 the Fiji Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded.
