The Obinitsa Church of Transfiguration of Our Lord was built in 1637 by local peasants from the areas around the Pärnu River. The church has been described as an “architectural poem” for its unusual shape and design. The church was dedicated to the Transfiguration of Our Lord in 1722. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Estonia.

The Obinitsa Church is one of the few surviving 17th-century churches in Estonia and is the only one that has remained untouched for almost 400 years. It is also the last active church of the Pärnu-Üleji vicarage, which operated for more than 500 years before it was closed in 1949.

It currently serves as the residence of a priest who is in charge of visiting services and performing baptisms, funerals, and an occasional wedding.
