History:
St. Mary's Church is believed to have been built in the 14th century soon after the area was conquered by the Teutonic Knights. Of the original building only fragments remain, such as parts of the altar and a carved sacristy. The cornerstone of the current building is dated to 1543, after a major restoration in the 1520s. Since then, the church’s fortunes have been varied. In 1558 the spire burned down in a lightning strike, while during the Great Northern War it was heavily damaged by troops and taken apart by locals for building materials, its altarpiece sold and its valuable oak benches looted. In 1819 the church was fully restored. In 1877 two new bells were added to the spire and in 1965 it was designated an architectural monument. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Estonia.
