It is located in the small coastal borough of Hellamaa, situated on the island of Hiiumaa in the Baltic Sea. The church is considered one of the most important cultural monuments of the island. History:

The Hellamaa Orthodox Church was originally built as a Catholic church. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1524, it was given away from the Bishop of Tallinn to the Greek Orthodox community of Hiiumaa Island. It was originally built in the Gothic style but later on underwent further architectural changes. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Estonia.
