Sembel Kidane Mihret Church In Eritrea: History,Facts, & Services
Sembel Kidane Mihret Church is the oldest and largest Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Eritrea. Located in the capital city of Asmara, it is part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It was built in 1921 by Emperor Haile Selassie and has been a cornerstone of Ethiopian Orthodox culture in Eritrea ever since. The church’s name translates to “Eternal Saviour and Righteous Father” and is named after a faithful saint from the seventeenth century. The church is renowned for its intricately detailed interior, which includes striking chandeliers, icons and paintings that highlight the complex message of the Orthodox Christian faith. In addition to being a place of worship, Sembel Kidane Mihret is also a symbol of unity for the faithful in Eritrea, regardless of their ethnic background. Services are held in the Ge’ez language and all are welcomed to join and take part in traditional religious practices.
