Mendefera Medhanie Alem Church In Eritrea is the oldest church in the country, dating back to the late 19th century. The Church is located in the city of Mendefera, in the center of Eritrea. The church was constructed at the request of Emperor Yohannes III and opened in 1894. It has been an important religious and cultural center for the people of Eritrea. The Church is a perfect example of late 19th century Ethiopian architecture, with its tall tower, red-tiled roof and celestory windows. The interior of the Church is decorated by beautiful icons, murals and frescoes and is among the oldest churches of Eritrea. The Mendefera Church annually celebrates the Birth of the Virgin Mary, and a procession is made from the church to the nearby Kibirestle River. The Church also holds services throughout the year, including a morning service and vespers in the evenings.
