The Orthodox Tewahdo Church In Eritrea is part of the Oriental Orthodox Church, a communion of six national Churches including the Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Indian, Ethiopian, and Eritrean churches. It is one of the oldest forms of Christianity in Africa and has been in Eritrea for over 1500 years. The Church is known for its liturgy, art, and culture which have evolved with the people of Eritrea. The Church currently controls the religious, educational, and cultural life of its members, and its regulations are enforced by a Central Synod of seven bishops appointed by the Eritrean government.

The Orthodox Tewahdo Church in Eritrea dates back to the late 5th Century AD, when Boro-Phar, the first native Eritrean, was baptized by missionaries from the Coptic Church of Alexandria. At this time, Orthodox Tewahdo was brought to the Horn of Africa and was spread in areas which are now Eritrea and Ethiopia. Through the centuries, the Church was exposed to different cultural influences, however the core beliefs of the Church have remained largely the same. In 1893, several Eritrean Orthodox clergymen held a meeting in Golgotha, now known as Debre-Berhan, in Ethiopia in which they agreed to divide the Church in Eritrea into two branches: the Eritrean Orthodox Church and the Ethiopia Orthodox Church. Despite the divisions of the Church, it was able to remain an integral part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Since then services have been conducted in both languages of Tigrigna and Arabic.
