Maedo Ruba Enda Giorgis Church In Eritrea: History,Facts, & Services

Maeda Ruba Enda Giorgis Church is one of the oldest and most important churches in Eritrea. The church was established in the northern province of the country in 1588 by the Abune Ruba Enda Gio, said to be the first Abyssinian saint. It is a place of great importance to the Orthodox Christians of the country and serves both as a place of worship and as an important cultural site. The church has a number of unique features, including a huge dome and an elaborately sculpted facade. The grounds of the church are also home to a number of important historical artifacts, including an ancient cross believed to be made by the saint himself. Inside, the church has many beautiful frescoes and a gilded altar. Maeda Ruba Enda Giorgis often hosts large religious events such as baptisms, weddings, and memorial services.
