History:
The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church traces its roots back to the 4th century when Christianity spread throughout the region, but was officially founded in 1557 by Emperor Lebna Dengel. The church was originally independent until the late 19th century when it was taken over by the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. After Eritrea’s independence in 1991, the church regained its autonomy and was again able to operate independently. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Eritrea.
