The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church is the largest denomination in Eritrea and is the country's state religion. The Church broke away from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in 1993 and was recognized by the Ethiopian Orthodox Synod in 1998. It is believed to have been founded in the 5th century AD and has been at the center of Eritrean cultural and social life for centuries. This church holds weekly worship services, observes the seven sacraments, and celebrates the feasts of such saints as Eritrea's national saint, Aba Gerima. They also have a variety of ministries, including health, education, counseling, and civil service to their congregants.
