It is believed to have been built in the 7th century by Ezana, the first Christian king of the ancient empire of Axum, hence making the church an example of some of the earliest Christian architecture in Africa. The church follows traditional Orthodox Christianity faith and doctrines, and celebrates all traditional Christian holidays. The church is well maintained and decorated with local art and artifacts from the Axumite period, and includes a rock-hewn sanctuary believed to have been built partially in response to the persecution of Christians during the Axumite era.
