Semdi Orthodox church In Eritrea is an Eastern Orthodox church which is part of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC). It is an ancient church with a rich history. It was founded in the 4th century AD by the Syrionite monks of Syria-Palestine. They were sent to Eritrea by Emperor Constantine the Great and were granted permission by Axumite King Ezana. It is estimated that the number of members of the church surpasses 3 million. It is the largest Orthodox denomination in the Horn of Africa. The cornerstone of the church’s teachings is adherence to the Nicene Creed and observance of the five sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, and Unction. It also teaches that the Bible is the source of authority in doctrinal matters. Theology and spiritual practice are based on the teachings of the Church Fathers, especially the three Ecumenical Councils held in Nicaea (325), Constantinople (381) and Ephesus (431). The church provides a variety of services to its members. These include Sunday School and other educational activities, bible study, spiritual guidance, pastoral counseling, and social services. It also holds special liturgical services on major religious holidays, such as Easter and Christmas.
