History:

The Field Museum of Natural History in the city of Chicago, Illinois was founded in 1893, shortly after the World’s Fair of 1893 (also known as the Columbian Exposition). The museum was created by innovative attorneys Marshall Field and Edward E. Ayer, who wanted to share their personal collection of natural artifacts and curiosities with the public. Marshall Field had collected and donated some of the artifacts that were displayed in the Fair’s Anthropological Hall, and Edward Ayer had offered his extensive collection of Native American artifacts to the Fair. At the fair’s conclusion, Field and Ayer purchased the remaining items and stored them in a building adjacent to the once-booming factory district of Chicago. The Field Museum was incorporated in 1894 and officially opened on June 2, 1897. The Museum housed the most comprehensive array of artifacts of any museum in the world, and it was this collection that eventually became the core of the Museum’s exhibitions. In 1905, the Field Museum expanded its research to include expeditions to then-remote regions of the world to collect artifacts for the permanent collection.
