History:

The Alamo, located in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the most famous locations in Texas and the United States, and is strongly associated with the 1836 Battle of the Alamo between Mexican and Texan insurgent forces. Before its history as a fort, The Alamo was first established as Mission San Antonio de Valero, a mission of the Spanish Catholic church. The mission was founded in 1718 and served to spread the Catholic faith among the various American Indian tribes that lived in the area. Over the years, the mission was secularized, and the structure began to take on a military purpose. By 1803, Spain had ceded control of the mission to the newly-formed Republic of Mexico. As tensions between Mexico and the United States increased, the fortifications that had been built around the mission were improved and strengthened. In 1835, in the wake of a revolution in Mexico and the resulting tension between the two countries, the Texas insurgents captured the fort. Shortly thereafter, the Alamo served as the site for the well-known battle between the Mexican army and Texan insurgents. Though the battle was lost, the heroic spirit of the Alamo--symbolized by the rallying cry, "Remember the Alamo!"--made it a powerful symbol of Texan and American identity.
