History:

The Space Center Houston (originally the Manned Spacecraft Center, and later the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center) is the hub of the NASA Human Spaceflight Program. Located in Houston, Texas – the fourth largest city in the United States – the Space Center Houston consists of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, the Johnson Space Center Support Complex, and the Christopher C. Kraft, Jr. Mission Control Center. The Space Center Houston was established in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy approved the Manned Spacecraft Center. It was initially managed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and served as the control center for all the early Project Mercury and Gemini flights. Over the next several decades, the Space Center Houston became a world leader in the exploration of space, it played a pivotal role in the Apollo, SkyLab, and Shuttle programs, and it tested the spacecraft and hardware that led to the International Space Station. The NASA Johnson Space Center is the primary center of Human Spaceflight operations for the United States Government, and it is here that all astronauts, ground controllers, mission planners, and training personnel for human spaceflight operations are based.
