The first recorded mention of St James' Church appears in a 1222 property deed, although archaeological evidence suggests that there may have been a church on the site as early as the 11th century. In 1280, the church was given a royal license, which allowed it to collect business and property taxes. During the English Civil War, St James' was sacked by the Parliamentary forces in 1642 as a result of its Royalist sympathies. It was restored in 1660 when Charles II reclaimed the throne and a rededication ceremony was held in 1669. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.
