St Chad's Parish Church was originally built around 1150. Its oldest part is the Romanesque chancel, which is thought to be the earliest surviving part of the structure. The church was greatly expanded in the 14th century with the addition of the South Aisle and Tower. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.

St Chad's Parish Church is one of England's first deconsecrated churches. The church is home to two memorials for two of Lichfield's most famous sons – Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin, and Samuel Johnson, the poet and lexicographer.
