History:
Established in 1832, St Michael's Church was the first church to be built in the city. Its design was based on the Gothic style popular at the time among wealthy landowners who constructed private chapels. The building was constructed out of coursed stone rubble and positioned facing 45-degrees towards the south-west corner of St. Michael's Place. The design consisted of a chancel, nave, east tower with a spire, a south transept and a north porch. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.

The church was designed by the architect Charles Busby, who was born in the city. The church is known for its Norman-style doorways, decorated with foliate-scrolled capitals. It is Grade II listed and stands in a prominent position on the corner of St. Michael's Place and Church Street.
