Lincoln Cathedral In England: History,Facts, & Services

Lincoln Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral located in Lincoln, England. It dates back to the 10th century, when it was founded as a Benedictine Abbey by Bishop Remigius on the site of an earlier Saxon church. The cathedral is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe and is one of the largest cathedrals in Britain today, with a spire that rises to over 300 feet (91 metres). It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to works of art from some of the greatest European masters of the medieval age. Lincoln Cathedral is also famous for its choir, which has recorded albums, broadcast regularly, and toured throughout the world. Lincoln Cathedral History The original church on the site dated back to the tenth century and was founded by Bishop Remigius. It was expanded and rebuilt several times, including the construction of the two western towers in the twelfth century, before the majority of the present structure was completed in the early thirteenth century. During the English Civil War in 1645, Lincoln Cathedral was badly damaged when it was besieged by Parliamentary forces. In the mid-eighteenth century, restoration was carried out by architect James Wyatt, who controversially topped off the towers with spires. Further restoration work was carried out in the twentieth century. Lincoln Cathedral Facts • Lincoln Cathedral is over 1,000 years old and is one of the tallest and largest cathedrals in England. • Its spire is one of the tallest in the world, reaching nearly 300 feet (91 metres) high. • The West Front of the cathedral, which was rebuilt in the early 13th century, is widely recognised as one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. • Inside the cathedral, visitors can see many exquisite works of art from some of the greatest medieval European masters. • Lincoln Cathedral is home to a world-renowned choir, and has even recorded albums and toured throughout the world. Lincoln Cathedral Services Lincoln Cathedral offers a variety of regular services, both contemporary and traditional. Sunday services include the Morning Eucharist, the Parish Eucharist, and the Choral Eucharist. The Cathedral also offers weekday services, weekday morning prayer, evening prayer, and prayer during the Day. Additionally, the Cathedral hosts special services throughout the year such as Advent and Easter services, as well as concerts, special events, and lectures.
