Church of St. Mary the Virgin In England: History,Facts, & Services
History:
Originally called Alexandria Pohick Church, the church was established by an Act of Assembly in 1765 and initially stood on the site of what is now the Christ Church Cemetery. In 1800 the church was renamed as the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Alexandria. During the Civil War, the church was used as a temporary hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.

-The church’s bell tower was built in 1818 and stands 80 feet tall. -The first pipe organ was installed in 1889 and the present organ was built in 1912. -In 1910, the church’s interior was redesigned and dedicated to George Washington.

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin offers services on Sunday and Tuesday nights. During the Sunday worship service, communion is offered. Other services include bible studies, prayer meetings, retreats, workshops, and outreach programs.This beautiful church in England has made a lot of significance in the past.
