The plaza is named after the National Heroine María Trinidad Sánchez. Plaza María Trinidad Sánchez was built in 1811 by the orders of Juan Sánchez Ramírez, the nation’s first president. Originally the plaza was known as Plaza de Armas. She was the lover of the patriot and congressional representative of the Dominican Republic (1844). Trinadad Sanchez was known for her revolt against Spain and her involvement in the independence movement. Throughout the 19th century, the plaza was modernized and transformed into a place dedicated to leisure. It saw the construction of a horse track and later a theater. In 1898 Philip Dease made a fountain in its center with the remains of a structure that was found on the place. The same year, Nicolás Devland created the main garden of the plaza. In the early 20th century, the plaza was renovated again with new gardens, stone benches, and a fountain. This gave it the current form. In 2019, the Plaza was declared a National Heritage Site for its historical importance to the Dominican Republic. Today, Plaza María Trinidad Sánchez is considered one of the most iconic places in Santo Domingo and is a popular tourist spot.
