The Parque Independencia, located in Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic, is a public park dedicated to the celebration of the Dominican Republic's independence from Haiti in 1844. Historically, the park has been the center of many important events such as the signing of the Proclamation of Independence on February 27th, 1844 and the centenary of independence in 1944. The park's construction began shortly after the Dominican Republic declared its independence from Haiti in the winter of 1844. The area of the park was formerly part of a sugar plantation belonging to a wealthy Frenchman named J. Pierrot. After being purchased by the government, the land was eventually transformed into a park containing a commemorative monument, several statues, a large fountain, and other ornamental features. In 1944, for the 100-year anniversary of Dominican independence, the Parque Independencia underwent further renovations. A new statue of the  Dominican Republic's national hero, General Máximo Gómez, was added to the park. The existing monument and fountain were also refurbished and given a more prominent place in the park. Since then, the Parque Independencia has become increasingly important not only to Santiago de los Caballeros, but to Dominican culture as a whole.
