History:

Hacienda Cufa is a plantation estate located in the Barahona province of the Dominican Republic. The plantation estate was founded in 1520 by Don Bartolomé de Cufa, a Spanish nobleman from Galicia. He became the first settler in the region and was granted land by King Ferdinand II of Aragon for his loyal service to the Spanish Crown. Hacienda Cufa became one of the most productive sugarcane plantations in the colonial Caribbean during the 17th century, its peak of production coinciding with the so-called "Golden Age of sugar" in the Caribbean. The plantation was made up of lands ranging from 800 to 1,000 hectares (2,000 to 3,000 acres), of which 500 hectares (1,200 acres) were used for cultivating sugarcane. It was one of the earliest, and largest, sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic. In 1822, Hacienda Cufa was acquired by the newly self-declared Republic of Spanish-speaking Haiti to provide income for the new nation. The property was mismanaged for some time, leading to its eventual closure in 1850 as a part of the dissolution and breakup of the Haitian Republic. By this time, Hacienda Cufa had become one of the most prosperous plantations in the region. In 1860, following the restoration of the Dominican Republic, the property was bought by the Dominican president Ignacio María González, and it again became one of the most productive sugar plantations in the Caribbean. It remained as such until the mid-20th century, when it was slowly transformed from an agricultural enterprise into a tourist destination.
