History:
The Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte (English: Juan Pablo Duarte Cultural Plaza) is a public park located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It is one of the most important public spaces in the city and a major landmark in the Caribbean. It is named in honor of the nation’s founding father, General Juan Pablo Duarte. The first version of the plaza, named El Parque Oriental, was built between 1887 and 1889, under the orders of President Francisco Gregorio Billini and was designed by the engineer Miguel Gaston Guillén. The original design featured a large pedestal in the center of the park, which was meant to be a monument to honor Pedro Santana, the Dominican Republic’s first president. The park was later renamed Parque Duarte. In 1962, General Rafael Trujillo ordered a major renovation of the public space, replacing the pedestal with a large neon cross, honoring the author of the Dominican Republic’s national anthem, La Bella Patria. The park was later refurbished in 1996 and given its current name, Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte, to honor its namesake, General Duarte. The plaza now features a bronze equestrian statue of Duarte, as well as museums, galleries, and a beautiful fountain. The plaza is located near numerous educational institutions and is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike. It serves as a symbolic reminder of the Dominican Republic’s struggle for independence and is a must-see for anyone visiting Santo Domingo.
