History:
Pico Duarte is recognized as the highest peak in the Caribbean with an elevation of 10,164 feet. It is located in the Cordillera Central mountain range of the Dominican Republic, in the provinces of La Vega, Santiago, and San Juan de la Maguana. The name ‘Pico Duarte’ originates from the independence hero, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez. Though his surname was Duarte, he was widely known as ‘El Cacique’ (the Chief) among his compatriots in the Dominican Republic. He served as a major-general during the Haitian revolution and the Dominican independence war and was instrumental in the battle of Azua, during the former. The summit of the Pico Duarte has been a popular hiking destination for tourists. The trail to the peak was built by the Cuban engineer and explorer Eugenio Charles in 1868. He was the first person to identify and map the mountain. It was first climbed by a German mountaineer, Conrad Ehrenfels, in 1876. Since its discovery, Pico Duarte has become a symbol of Dominican pride. In 1951, the mountain became a national monument and was declared a protected area under the jurisdiction of the Dominican Republic National Park System. It has also been used as a political platform, with a memorial dedicated to late president Rafael Trujillo at its peak, in 1961. Pico Duarte is a favorite haunt for adventurous tourists and many local climbers.
