History:

Fortaleza San José was first founded in the early 16th century by Settlers from the newly created Spanish Colony of Dominican Republic. The fort and surrounding settlement had humble beginnings, but grew to become a prosperous trading center in the Caribbean. It was built to provide protection for traders from pirate attacks, as well as to defend against hostile native tribes in the nearby region. In 1630, a royal decree established Fortaleza San José as a city and major port of call in the Caribbean. Trade flourished, and by 1700, Fortaleza San José had expanded to become an important center of trade in the area. In the mid 1700’s, Fortaleza San José was taken over by the French, who used it as their base of operations during the French Revolution. However, when the French left during the late 1700’s, the fort and settlement fell into disrepair, making it easy for pirates to attack and capture ships. In the early 1800’s, Fortaleza San José and its surrounding settlement were restored and improved by the Spanish. The Spanish built a new fort and created a strong defensive line against invaders from the British, French, and Dutch as well as against privateers. The Spanish also expanded the city and fort, as well as developed other areas such as markets and schools for education. In 1844, Fortaleza San José was ceded to the United States as part of the secret agreement between the US and Spanish authorities. The fort was later demolished, but the settlement endured and continued to be a major port of call in the Caribbean. Today, Fortaleza San José is an integral part of the Dominican Republic and stands as a reminder of the city's long and storied history.
