History:

Fortaleza San Luis, Santiago de los Caballeros is a historic fortress located in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. It was built in 1723 as part of the Spanish colonial defense system. The fort was initially constructed during the period of 1723-1726 to protect the city from potential attacks by foreign marauders, but its main purpose was to defend the city against the growing threat of the expanding French Empire. The defensive construction of the fortress was part of the system of forts, outposts, and watchtowers established along the Caribbean coast and the Cibao Valley by the Spanish to guard the islands and cities of Spanish America. Fortaleza San Luis played a key role in the defense of Santiago during the Haitian invasion of 1807-1809. The fortress was besieged by the troops of Verret, commander of the Haitian forces. Although unable to withstand the powerful bombardment of the enemy forces, the fort was never actually captured or destroyed. It served as a rallying point for the population of Santiago during the siege and provided a safe haven which enabled them to continue the struggle against the Haitians. After the Spanish-American War of 1898, the fort was used by the United States military as a base for their Caribbean training exercises. The fortress was refurbished by the US military in 1970 and is today open to the public. It houses a museum which contains artifacts from the colonial period as well as items from the US forces who used it as a base. It is a popular tourist destination and a lasting reminder of Dominican history. You must visit one of these historical places in Dominican-Republic on your Dominican-Republic tour
