History:

Altos de Chavón is an archaeological park, museum, and cultural center in the Dominican Republic. Located in La Romana, the 573-acre (231-hectare) estate is home to one of the best-preserved pre-Columbian sites in the Caribbean, the 16th-century mountain village of Altos de Chavón. The village and surrounding area were originally inhabited by native Taíno people. During the 16th century, the area was inhabited by Spanish settlers and used as a mining outpost for gold and salt. In the late 19th century, it was taken over by Cuban revolutionaries who used it as a defense against the Spanish tyranny. In the latter half of the 20th century, a group of American architects and designers provided a unique vision for the village of Altos de Chavón. The land was purchased by a consortium of American and Colombian investors in 1982, and the master plan was unveiled in 1984. The project was overseen by renowned designer Roberto Cole and his team. Working closely with Dominican authorities, they constructed a domed cathedral, a six-level amphitheatre, an ethnographic museum, and a multi-function center to provide cultural education. In 2002, the Altos de Chavón Cultural Center began offering programs in the areas of art, music, fashion, and design, as well as offering academic partnerships with institutions like the Parsons School of Design, Parsons The New School for Design, and Nicky’s Art Institute.
