Casa de Tostado in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is a historic building that has served many purposes throughout its history. Built in 1776, it once served as a family residence and was later used as a political prison. From 1885 to 1925, the building served as a court of justice and is now a museum and cultural center. The early history of the Casa de Tostado dates back to 1776, when it was constructed as a family home. It belonged to Francisco de Tostado and his family, who at the time were among the leading officials in Santo Domingo. In 1826 the home was taken by the Spanish authorities and used as a political prison and a court of justice. During the latter 19th century, the Casa de Tostado became the most important and respected court of justice in Santo Domingo, presiding over hundreds of criminal and civil cases. Its fame was such that many Dominicans traveled from afar to appear in the prestigious court. In 1925, the court was relocated to another location and the Casa de Tostado was closed. The building became abandoned and fell into disrepair. It was not until 2011 that the Casa de Tostado was restored and reopened as a cultural center and museum.
