The history of Ulm Minster can be traced back to 1275. It was originally built as a hall-church and was dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul. Ulm Minster was at the time the most important church in the city. In 1377, the church was given a Gothic makeover during the reign of Emperor Charles IV. The church was enlarged and given a new aisle that extended all the way around the choir. During the 15th century, the Minster was given a lavish Renaissance makeover. It was at this time that the church became the main church of the city. In 1543, the Protestant Reformation reached the city of Ulm and the Minster was stripped of its substantial Catholic finery. This did not detract from the beauty of the architecture, and the building remained an impressive structure until 1936 when a large German neo-Gothic spire was added. Over the years, the Minster has been both admired and attacked. In 1759, the Minster was almost completely destroyed in a massive fire that was started by a lightening strike. In 1937, the nave was damaged when an Allied bomb struck the church. Following World War II, a major renovation project was undertaken at the Minster and architectural finery that had been destroyed over the centuries was restored.
